The 5th AsiaEngage Regional Conference 2020

ABOUT US

The AsiaEngage (AE) Regional Conference is a regional platform organised biennially in fulfilment of the research, education, and engagement missions of higher education institutions to create mutually beneficial partnerships between multi-sector stakeholders – higher education institutions, industries, foundations, communities, NGOs and government agencies – to uplift the quality of peoples’ lives across ASEAN and Asia.

Following the success of our first four conferences and the benefits that it brings to the university-community-industry engagement practitioners in Asia and beyond, the AUN USR&S Secretariat at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) will be organising the 5th AsiaEngage Regional Conference in Malaysia this November. In addition, the fifth edition of AsiaEngage Regional Conference will be merged under the University for Society International Conference (U4SIC), a large-scale international conference that brings together three major international conferences co-hosted by UKM, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia on the research area of community engagement.

With the theme of “How Community Engagement Can Drive Innovative Sustainability in the 4IR Era?”, the AUN USR&S Secretariat cordially invites change makers, community builders and all relevant counterparts (be it the government body/agencies, university, community leaders/organization, civil societies, and even industry partners) to take part in this conference.

Together we can make a difference!

THE SUB-THEMES

The conference aims to foster an exposition of experiences and learning in four identified sub-themes, as broadly defined here, without being exhaustive:

A. University for Community Engagement:

The community is a key stakeholder in SDG implementation. In most countries, the public has little knowledge of the SDGs and little opportunity to actively participate in its implementation. How can universities initiate, facilitate, and strengthen community engagement and participation in addressing the challenges of SDGs? How can the community actively contribute to the implementation of SDGs for their social, economic and environmental wellbeing?

B. University for Civil Society Engagement:

As agents of change, universities and civil society organisations (including non-governmental organisations and foundations) mutually contribute to the designing, implementing and monitoring/evaluating efforts for sustainable development in the community. How can universities and civil society organisations work together and strengthen the impact of their sustainable development efforts?

C. University for Industry Engagement:

Identifying joint university-industry efforts in sustainable development that are already in place can provide a powerful narrative about the impact of such engagements and a strong impetus for further action. How can universities play a role as hubs of innovation to support and host businesses that provide technologies and services for sustainable development? As SDGs skills and literacy become the growing expectation from employers, how can industries leverage on the role of universities in training future implementers of SDGs?

D. University for Government Engagement:

As entities devoted to knowledge creation and teaching for the benefit of the society, universities can play a lead role in policy development and advocacy for sustainable development. How can universities synthesise knowledge that supports the making of government policies that align with the SDGs? How can policy makers work together with universities in identifying issues, options, and solutions to sustainable development, and evaluate sustainable development policies?
